Simoncelli aiming for solid points from second on the grid

Sunday, May 15, 2011 0 comments

> Team San Carlo Honda Gresini rider, Marco Simoncelli came within a hair's breadth of his first pole position in MotoGP after mounting the strongest challenge to the dominant Casey Stoner. Hiroshi Aoyama was 13th.

The Italian, following the disappointment of crashes at Jerez and Estoril in the last two rounds, is keen to pick up solid points in Sunday’s Monster Energy Grand Prix de France. Simoncelli managed to split the Repsol Honda’s and will start from the middle of the front row, ahead of Andrea Dovizioso and Dani Pedrosa. Aoyama struggled to make significant improvements on his free practice pace, when switching to a soft tyre in this afternoon's qualifying session and the Japanese rider will start from thirteenth on the grid tomorrow.

Buckler safe driving campaign starts at Jerez

Saturday, April 16, 2011 0 comments

This season’s Buckler Forum 0,0 for Responsible Driving in MotoGP began with the first gathering at the Gran Premio bwin de España at Jerez.
The second round of the 2011 MotoGP World Championship at Jerez was the site of the V Buckler Forum 0,0 for Responsible Driving in MotoGP during the first weekend of April. One year on from its inauguration the Buckler Forum has become an important first-hand source to find out more about the latest developments and evolutions in elite motorcycling safety, and is also viewed as an ideal manner in which to raise awareness of both innovation and safety amongst road users.
The theme of the opening Forum of the year was “Doping and Safety in relation to Driving”, a current topic in the media. Also touched on were issues including the new anti-doping regulations, physical and mental preparation, and nutrition and hydration – all in relation to both the circuit and the open road.
Four experts were present at this first meeting of 2011. Executive Sporting Director for the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM), Ignacio Verneda, spoke about the regulations for motorcycling competition in relation to doping. Marcos Hirsch, in his capacity as physical trainer and nutritionist for MotoGP World Champion Jorge Lorenzo was also present, along with Buckler 0,0 Ambassador to the World Championship Alex Crivillé, whose presence added the perspective of a rider and elite sportsperson. And from Dorna, Safety Officer and member of the MotoGP Safety Commission, Javier Alonso, was in attendance.
The new anti-doping regulations, which are not only limited to motorcycling but applicable to all sporting disciplines, were launched in 2010 whilst doping controls have been carried out in motorcycling since 1999. Mr Verneda began by saying: “1,100 tests across all disciplines of motorcycling have been carried out, of which only 1.5% have provided positive results. This shows that we enjoy a very clean sport. In MotoGP, from 1999 until the present day, 184 tests have been done, of which just one was positive.”
In 2010 the Guada programme was launched, which permits testing 24 hours a day across all 365 days of the year over a determined number of riders. Throughout last season 25 riders across the different disciplines of the FIM’s remit were randomly selected to provide tests, and in 2011 four MotoGP riders will be a part of this programme and will be selected at random from the top 10 across each category.
This system was created, says Verneda, in order to “have a clean sport in all disciplines. We want motorcyclists to be ambassadors for our sport, and also maintain the health of our sportspeople for when they finish competing. In a fast sport such as motorcycling, a rider under the influence of certain types of drugs can pose a danger to the safety of other riders.”
Marcos Hirsch discussed the importance of nutrition to fitness and success, and said: “With technical analysis you can see how a person’s metabolism functions and then perfectly adjust the type of nutrients which will benefit them. Food is the body’s gasoline, we are what we eat. An athlete being prepared at 100% is a mental state. The three main things needed for performance and good health are training, food and rest. The difficulty comes in finding the balance between the three.”
Alex Crivillé commented: “When you are physically in shape your mind works better. As Marcos said, food is important and hydration is a fundamental aspect for the proper functioning of the body and the senses. You can lose up to two litres of water during a race, something which happened to me during races such as Malaysia. The loss of water leads to a drop in concentration, physical performance, increased fatigue and consequently a reduction in reactions. This can also happen to a rider on the road, and for this reason hydration is key.”
Talking about doping controls, Crivillé said: “The anti-doping controls are positive. They were already in effect during my time riding, although they weren’t as common as they are now. I think it’s extremely important to control and sanction this to avoid unsportsmanlike and harmful riding.”
Concluding the Forum, Javier Alonso said: “It’s been very important to have representatives from the FIM here this weekend to explain things to riders, who could be harmed if they make the wrong decisions. The Guada programme allows our sport to be a clean one. To allow this and to go fast riders don’t need to take prohibited substances.”
Alonso also announced two new projects aimed at improving safety.
“The Championship, not only Dorna, is always highly attentive to the safety of the riders and is focused on improving everything to do with safety. This afternoon we had a meeting with the FIM, various medical and technical engineering people, with the aim of laying down a regulation which will allow us to introduce the airbag as mandatory in all world competitions. There are two companies, Alpinestars and Dainese, who were invited to this meeting because they already have advanced technology in this area. Both are already using their systems in some races and sessions and it is important that they can be used in all races.”
The second project in development is a system which protects the brake lever to avoid crashes and subsequent injuries. Dorna confirmed that “with the help of Ducati and the Clinica Mobile we have developed an element which protects the brake lever. We have brought a prototype here. We still have to make some changes, but we will test it at Brno with some riders with a view to making it mandatory in 2012.”
The Buckler 0,0 Forums will be present throughout the 2011 season at all Spanish GPs, whilst Buckler 0,0 remains the official beer of the Spanish Grands Prix.

Stoner and Rossi’s thoughts after clashing in Jerez

Sunday, April 3, 2011 0 comments

Casey Stoner (Repsol Honda) and nine time World Champion Valentino Rossi (Ducati Team), were involved in an incident in the MotoGP race at Jerez, which took the Australian out of proceedings.

Stoner had been in second place when the Italian mounted a challenge behind him and attempted a manoeuvre going into turn one. The Ducati rider made the move past Stoner, but lost control of his bike, causing a collision which brought them both down. Rossi was able to remount his bike and continue, picking up 11 points in fifth place. Here are the thoughts of both riders after the coming together during the race in which Rossi took full responsibility for.

”We made a good start to the race, we understood the tyres weren’t the best and they were trying to spin, so we needed to back off quite a bit,” said the Repsol Honda rider. ”Rossi came up the inside and wasn’t able to stay on the bike and took me out. It was not the best day for us for sure, after such a good weekend. We’re very disappointed with this result. I believe we would have been there at the end because it was a long race with many people crashing which is why we were being quiet.”

Stoner was clearly frustrated after the incident which ended his race prematurely. After the race, Rossi went to the Honda garage to apologise to Stoner for his mistake. The Repsol Honda rider shared his feelings after the two exchanged words.

”For sure, I would prefer if Valentino did it away from the cameras and would say something to me quietly without always having to have proof,” commented Stoner. ”For sure Valentino doesn’t do this for himself, he just wants to show to everybody that he has apologised. Yes it’s a nice gesture, it’s very good, but it still doesn’t change the result today, so we’ll see what happens in the next races.”

Rossi made amends for his mistake, but insisted he was in a position to fight for the podium.

”Yes it was a crazy race because it was difficult conditions and everyone was on the limit with the softer tyres,” explained Rossi. “I was very fast in the beginning of the race in the wet, but unfortunately I made a mistake in braking and I crashed. Unfortunately, I also crashed into Stoner. I went to him to say sorry that I made a mistake. With my race today, we had the potential to try and win or finish on the podium, but at the end the result isn’t so bad. I came back to finish fifth which was important points for the championship.”

Good pace for Rossi, Hayden 11th in QP

The Ducati Team pair analyse qualifying for the Gran Premio bwin de España.

After a very positive trio of practice sessions, a minor low-side fall in Turn 8 influenced Valentino Rossi’s qualifying result at Jerez. Third on Friday and sixth in Saturday morning’s free-practice, the Italian will have to start from the twelfth spot on the grid, from where he will nonetheless try to take advantage of the good work carried out on the GP11’s set-up this weekend.

The bike Rossi crashed with was in fact his choice between two setups that were different, and the second bike wasn’t able to repeat his performance from this morning. His teammate Nicky Hayden had a good morning session, but in qualifying, he was not able to improve his time with a soft tyre as much as he had hoped.

Nicky Hayden (Ducati Team) 11th, 1’40.175
“Eleventh isn’t exactly the ideal starting spot, by any means. This morning we made a pretty good step forward to start with and improved the lap time pretty well there in mid-session, but this afternoon, with the wind, I didn’t go much faster than I went this morning—under two tenths, which is certainly not good enough if you want to qualify well. I’m not happy about the performance. I don’t want to make a lot of excuses; the bike-rider combination wasn’t really good today, but anything can happen in the race tomorrow. The weather seems pretty unpredictable at the moment, so we’ve just got to get prepared for anything and see what happens.”

Valentino Rossi (Ducati Team) 12th, 1’40.185
“We really didn’t need that fall because I was going quite well with the right bike, the one I like better and that I would have used to do a time with the soft tyre later. I had to lap with the other bike, which was very different, an experiment that unfortunately didn’t work very well. I didn’t feel good on the bike, and I was slower than I had been this morning. It’s a shame. If I had to make a mistake, that was really the wrong moment, because otherwise the second row was within our reach. We could have been with Simoncelli, Spies and Dovizioso, who were on our pace. The top three are going faster, but the difference isn’t as big as it was in Qatar. I like the track, and our pace isn’t bad; we’ll see what happens if we’re able to get a good start.”

Pedrosa Kembali Naik Meja Operasi

Saturday, April 2, 2011 0 comments

Repsol Honda duo top Jerez timesheet

www.motogp.com - Dani Pedrosa and Casey Stoner had a positive start in Jerez, with both riders sharing the top positions on the time sheets on the first day of practice for the Gran Premio bwin de España. They were the only riders who managed to set a lap time in the 1'39”s, which was also broke the Circuit Record of 1'39.731 set by Pedrosa in 2010.

The Australian was the fastest rider in the morning session with 1'39.551, followed by Pedrosa with a marginal gap of 0.028s. Then the Spaniard took the top spot in the afternoon with a lap time of 1'40.101, this time followed by Stoner in second with 1'40.289. The strong wind prevented the majority of riders from improving their times in the second session. Pedrosa concentrated on short runs with his injured shoulder, Stoner focused to improve his settings with the bike on a circuit that has proved tricky for him in the past. Andrea Dovizioso, who had a crash in the morning practice in a very fast corner, escaped without injury. The Italian was sixth on the combined free practice times, with a best lap of 1'40.429.

Dani Pedrosa, Repsol Honda
"I think we are doing a good job. The bike was working ok, it was moving a little but maybe because the grip was not so good today. Other riders were also struggling with it and we saw some crashes in all categories. Also the strong wind played a part in the afternoon, it was more difficult to control the bike especially on fast corners and we couldn't improve the lap times. Regarding my physical condition, I'm struggling in the same way I did in the Qatar race because the situation has not changed, but I cannot do anything to feel better, so I'm just focused on riding as best as I can. I'm doing short runs because it's better for me and working on the bike to prepare for the race. We hope to improve tomorrow and do a good qualifying practice".

Casey Stoner, Repsol Honda
"The first session went well and I had a good feeling with the bike. We tried to repeat this in the afternoon session but the conditions weren't perfect - it was quite windy. It seems to be a little smoother to ride here than in the past, but it's a shame the weather wasn't better, so we could spend some time working on the settings. In general both bikes we tried seemed to work pretty well. The grip level doesn't seem to be so good here, I think everyone is struggling with this, so that's another element we need to work on tomorrow in time for qualifying".

Andrea Dovizioso, Repsol Honda
“It was a difficult day. This morning I crashed on the very last lap because I lost the front, without any warning at Turn 11. The crash in itself was not too bad but then the wind in the afternoon made things worse. I think the second practice suffered due to these things put together and as a result I lost the feeling with the front. I couldn’t ride as I am able to do and it’s not a nice feeling, but it’s useless to complain, we have to continue working. I hope tomorrow there will be less wind so that we can focus on the set up of my RC212V".

Rossi and Hayden positive after Friday practices

www.motogp.com - The Ducati Team pair gave their reactions to the two practice sessions at Jerez on Friday.

Valentino Rossi posted the third-fastest time overall during the first day of practice in the Gran Premio bwin de España. The Italian set his quickest lap of 1’40.077 in the morning session, when conditions were slightly cooler and not as windy. Nicky Hayden on the other hand, was among one of the riders who improved in the afternoon, when he finished ninth, a little less than a second off his team-mate, in the combined results from both sessions. His fastest lap time was 1’41.058.

Valentino Rossi (Ducati Team)
“I’m happy because this morning I did the third-fastest time. In the afternoon when the higher temperature hurt us a little, I was fifth. Anyway, most of the riders went a bit slower in the second session. Apart from the two Hondas at the front, we’re closer to everyone else, which was our goal. It was a good day. There’s still work to do; we’re trying to find the right balance, and that’s why we’re trying two settings that are a little different from each other as we work on weight distribution. We have to improve the feeling with the front a little, the bike that I prefer still doesn’t turn like we want it to, which means we’ll have to find a compromise between the two set-ups. As for my shoulder, I don’t have much strength, but in terms of endurance, it’s a little better.”

Nicky Hayden (Ducati Team)
“We’re basically riding the same bike as in Qatar. Obviously with a couple of small tweaks for this track, you need a stiffer front spring and a few other little differences. We feel closer than we were in Losail. We made a little step forward this afternoon and it’s good because only a few riders improved in the afternoon session, though the wind was a lot worse. It’s the same for everybody, but the wind was really brutal today, especially around here where you’re leaned over in a lot of long corners. We’re still almost a second off of the front riders, but at least we’re inside a second, which wasn’t the case at Round 1. We’re not over here jumping up and down with joy, but we’re positive, and we’ll keep improving. There are a few places I’m lacking, but we’re trying to just make small gains and not make too many big changes.
